Quick Facts about Butterfly!

The butterfly stroke is a complex form of swimming that was actually developed by multiple swimmers who were attempting to do out-of-water recoveries while doing breaststroke. But, the father of the stroke is Sydney Cavill (whose father Fred Cavill was the original freestyler).

The best butterflier of all time is Michael Phelps, currently. Phelps holds the world record in 200 meter butterfly and actually broke the record 8 different times. Phelps has won 6 Olympic Gold medals in individual butterfly events and is recognized as “Butterfly King.”

Let’s start with arms! The three parts of the butterfly arm movement are the pull, the push, and the recovery. The pull is the fastest part of the arm movement and your hands pull towards your body, arms out in front and pulls them down. Finally, reaching their thumb to their thigh.

The push is performed with both arms underneath their body, and then back up and over. As you can see in the image below, breathing is quite tricky. The head is to be poised with our chin barely grazing the surface of the water. The push is performed with both arms underneath their body, and then back up and over. In the recovery, the arms swing sideways from behind us to the front, keeping elbows straight. Then, we dive back in the water to create a wave-like movement.

This all wraps up for the arm movement in butterfly. Legs, on the other hand, are a bit simpler. The leg movement requires that legs are synchronized the entire time. As you kick down, your toes will point downward to propel forward. An important tip to remember is that there are 2 cycles of butterfly kicks.
